The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance is having a kick-off weekend for the Grand Opening of the newly completed Native American dwelling house or longhouse built at their property called Handsell on Indiantown Road in Vienna.
The completed Chicone Longhouse at Handsell is the FIRST replica of a native dwelling house built on the Eastern Shore in 200 years! As a kick-off for the opening of the completed project, there will be a party with silent auction at Layton's Chance Winery on Friday, April 25, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. $10 per person/cash wine bar. Proceeds from this event will go to the maintenance of the longhouse and future educational programs.
There will be great food by the Handsell “chefs”, some inspired by Native cooking and entertainment will be provided by DJ "Chuckie Love" Hayward and Ron Warren, Flutist. A special array of items to bid on will be featured in the Silent Auction including a professional Custom Ink Drawing of Your Home, native basket, Framed Heron Print, Book on Native Americans, an Antique African Rifle, Indonesian Dinner for 8, hand-crafted mirror and much more.
Then on Sunday, April 27, 12 noon-4 p.m. all are welcome to come to Handsell on Indiantown Road north of Vienna to see the completed Chicone Longhouse, hear about the building of the longhouse with over 2000 hours of volunteer time, and then witness life of the native people by living history performer Daniel Firehawk Abbott.
In addition, the Pocomoke Indian Nation will return this year with their dug-out canoe and talk about how the native people made these vessals. For a $10 donation, visitors can sample a large plate of native inspired food and beverages! The NHPA's "Native Cookbook" is also available for purchase. Admission Free and open to the public, (food tent charge).
